At the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate
Press Conference to Announce the Arab Architects Awards – Third Edition in Cairo

At the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate in Cairo, a press conference was held on the evening of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to introduce the Arab Architects Awards in its third edition, scheduled to take place from November 24 to 26, 2025, in Cairo.

The conference aimed to highlight the objectives, significance, and importance of participating in the Arab Architects Awards. Key speakers included:
 - Architect Joseph Houran, President of the Union of Arab Architects
 - Prof. Dr. Hesham Saoudi, member of the Union representing Egypt
 - Dr. Yasser El-Sayed, Professor of Architecture at the Faculty of Fine Arts and jury member of the previous edition
 - Dr. Moataz Talba, Professor of Architecture
 - Dr. Ahmed El-Zayat, Head of the Architecture Division
 - Dr. Saad Makram

The event was attended by a distinguished audience of leading Egyptian architects and architecture enthusiasts. The conference was moderated by Dr. Ahmed El-Zayat.
Prof. Dr. Hesham Saoudi emphasized the importance of the awards, calling on Egyptian architects to participate actively, especially since this year’s edition is being held in Cairo. He described the competition as a valuable opportunity for learning, exchanging experiences, deepening professional practices in Arab architecture, and reinforcing the region’s unique identity and character.

Architect Joseph Houran, President of the Union of Arab Architects, stated that this is the oldest competition of its kind in the Arab world. He stressed the Union’s commitment to affirming Arab identity in architecture, criticizing immature practices that are detached from Arab cultural roots. Hourani highlighted that Arab architects have much to offer the world, contributing to local community development while actively engaging in global urban growth. He underscored the cultural and historical specificity of Arab societies, which places a responsibility on Arab architects to preserve identity through architectural practice. He concluded by inviting Egyptian architects to participate strongly in the third edition to be held in Cairo.

Dr. Yasser El-Sayed spoke about his enriching experience as a jury member in the previous edition, outlining the evaluation criteria adopted by the judges and affirming the transparency and impartiality of the jury, regardless of participants’ nationalities. He explained that the main criterion is the architectural quality and authenticity of the work, not its scale or cost, and presented examples of projects from the last edition that demonstrated originality and design maturity despite their small scale.

Dr. Moataz Talba stressed that what distinguishes the Union is its commitment to providing equal opportunities for Arab architects to showcase their intellectual and creative talents. He reaffirmed the Union’s mission to ensure broad participation across the Arab world and to spread its vision effectively.

The Arab Architects Awards is an international competition highlighting the best projects designed and executed by Arab architects worldwide over the past ten years. It was launched in cooperation between the “Arab Architects Association” and the “Order of Engineers and Architects of Lebanon,” under the umbrella of the “Federation of Arab Engineers.” The first edition was held in Beirut in October 2018, the second in Amman in November 2022, and the third is scheduled for Cairo in collaboration with the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate.

The Arab Architects Association, through these awards, seeks to foster cooperation and exchange of expertise, enhance capabilities, secure knowledge accumulation, and bridge the gap between education and professional practice. The initiative also aims to evaluate and critique Arab architectural innovation while encouraging young creative architects. It provides an open forum to discuss how Arab architecture addresses contemporary realities and challenges while remaining true to local identity.

Alongside the jury sessions—taking place over three days (November 24–26, 2025) in Cairo—the event will feature additional activities: honoring distinguished Arab architects, panel discussions on architecture, the digital age, and architectural education in the Arab world. Exhibitions by sponsors and displays of student works from Egyptian architectural schools will also accompany the event.

The names will be announced later, ensuring a balance between experienced practicing architects and academics from across the Arab world.

Arabic is the official language of the entire event. All participating architects must present their projects in Arabic, with the exception of symposia and lectures, which may be delivered in other languages with translation provided.

 Call for Submissions

 • Rehabilitation projects

Eligibility: Projects must have been completed within the last ten years in Arab countries.

During the event (November 24–26, 2025), each project will be allocated a maximum of 12 minutes for presentation. The architect may choose images and drawings to best illustrate the project, presented in a PowerPoint format that effectively conveys the concept, methodology, and final outcome. There are no restrictions on the number of visuals, but the time limit is strictly enforced. After each presentation, the jury will hold a 12–18 minute discussion with questions. Presentations should focus solely on the project itself, not the submitting office.

 - Announcement of the shortlist: October 21, 2025
